This innovative program provides free newspaper subscriptions and a wide variety of teaching guides to needy classrooms.
The newspapers and curricula are used to enrich virtually every aspect of a child's education – from mathematics to language arts, from kindergarten through high school.
Using the free curricula, participating teachers use the newspaper to reinforce instruction in basic skill areas and to develop higher-order problem solving and critical thinking abilities.

The family-based literacy program provides educational assistance to students and families of 72 inner-city school communities in the Houston area. The Readers Are Leaders Foundation provides free newspaper subscriptions, educational materials and literacy training to more than 20,000 families. Each family receives professionally developed bilingual teaching guides designed for different grade levels. Materials focus on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) mandated by the Texas Education Agency and tested on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests. These educational activities are as beneficial to the adults in these households as they are to the children, as many of these adults did not have educational opportunities, and many are recent immigrants with limited English skills.

Children and adults alike can improve their reading and language skills by reading Club Chronicle serial stories and completing related activities, which are published in the Houston Chronicle. These stories are especially valuable during school vacation periods. Research and statistics show that children can lose reading skills, often as much as a grade level, during breaks from school. In addition, families build strong relationships by reading and discussing these stories and completing the related activities together. Teachers use Club Chronicle features to creatively address Texas-mandated skills.
